Due to an injury sustained in February, Neymar only returned to acting two weeks before the World Cup, in the pre-cup friendlies. According to the selection team, the player would only reach 100% of his performance in the 2nd phase of the tournament.

In the first match against Switzerland, Neymar was hunted by his opponents and suffered 10 fouls. This was the largest number of fouls suffered by a player in a World Cup match since the England-Tunisia 98 World Cup match when Englishman Alan Shearer suffered 11 fouls. The 10 fouls suffered by the Brazilian player yielded 3 yellow cards for the Swiss.

On June 22, in a match valid for the second round of the World Cup group stage, Neymar scored his first league goal against Costa Rica completing Douglas Costa’s assist. After the elimination, Neymar was widely criticized worldwide for his frequent falls on the pitch during the games. The player’s “chute” has also been satirized as a joke by many supporters in Russia’s host country, and on TV shows around the world.
